Evergreen Highway Residence

This property is located on Old Evergreen Highway, overlooking the mighty Columbia River in Vancouver, WA. From the house’s elevated location, it has expansive views of the Columbia River, the Portland skyline and the Tualatin Mountains northwest of Portland.

The design was created around the clients’ primary goals: having an open-space plan that captures these expansive views from the main dining, kitchen and living room area; creating a strong indoor/outdoor connection from these rooms with a large deck; incorporating Vastu design principles in the home’s layout.

Vastu design principles were used to spatially arrange the house by locating the master bedroom in the southwest corner of the house, the guest bedroom in east, and the front entry to the north. Other Vastu consideration, such as a west facing dining room and main central room open and filled with natural daylight, were incorporated into the design.

To enhance natural daylight, clerestory windows are used above the kitchen/living room area, which provide both direct southern sunlight and indirect northern light. Below the southern clerestory windows is a covered deck that expands the interior space via two ten-foot wide sliding patio doors. The covered deck helps reduce late afternoon direct sunlight, while preventing the notorious Pacific Northwest rain from entering the main living areas.
