The home’s architectural design is quite simple, which visually allows the entry to be dramatic. The exposed, detailed white trusses create a dynamic and welcoming entry.

The farmhouse aesthetic continues into the interior spaces by using rough wood members, brick pavers and other exterior materials. The floor material is the actual 2x6 tongue and groove (T&G) subfloor painted white. It was roughed up during construction to give it the desired patina.

The overall design bucks the modern trend of the open floorplan. The various rooms are mostly individual spaces that flow from one room to the next—a flow intentionally that evokes 19th century farmhouse architecture.

To enhance the living room’s connection to the courtyard, the ceiling wood material and stain match the covered deck’s roof. The French doors’ hardware allows the doors to open 180-degrees to enhance the indoor/outdoor connection while maintaining its farmhouse character.

The masonry fireplace design adheres to the Rumford fireplace guidelines. It’s perfect for the farmhouse aesthetic and produces excellent heat.

The courtyard garden with veranda is the house’s main focal point. It provides a nice visual backdrop from the various interior spaces.

The kitchen is a dramatic departure from the modern open kitchen. By design it harkens back to the working kitchen. Both owners loved to bake and cook together. Creating an intimate room with separate work areas was a critical design goal.

The cabinetry conceptually looks and feels more like individual furniture than cabinets.

The beauty of having an enclosed kitchen is the extra wall for storage. The wall of storage provided the opportunity to avoid using upper cabinets, which are hard to access and visually clutter kitchen walls.
